Radio Issues - Too often in critical situations communications the data exchanges between law enforcement and public safety agencies are hampered by equipment incompatibilities. These incompatibilities are due to a lack of standards to provide a common, nationwide approach to telecommunications and information sharing.

I believe that technical assessments and evaluations of existing and emerging commercial products and services that may provide interim solutions under various interoperability scenarios.

Currently the Sheriffs Department is working with out dated equipment. The Citizen/Officer safety is my top concern. Currently a Sheriff deputies has communication problems with dispatch while in the mobile section of Spring Creek.

I believe that we need to address this issue immediately. I have looked at the recommendations, two suggestions, both of which are just “bandages” to the larger problem.

The first and most feasible is a vehicle mounted repeater. When an officer wants to transmit, a trunk mounted system simply looks at which frequency is unused and quickly assigns it to the officer for the duration of the transmission. These units would work not only with the vehicle radio but a handheld radio up to 100 yards.

The second temporary fix is an additional repeater in the Spring Creek area. The cost could be twice as much due to property, service fees, set up fees and equipment purchase.

The permanent fix is upgrading to a 800 MHZ system and upgrade of the Communications Center.
