Under Age Drinking- Teenage girl's are trying to be their own person. They are totally psyched one minute and in major trauma the next, at least in my house it was. It's definitely a tough time. We as parents want to protect them. Their friends want to influence them. They are still trying to decide what they want. So many choices! And to top it off, there's all this pressure about alcohol. Sure, giving in to pressure is easier than taking a stand. This is the first time in their life that they get to make their own decisions, and be their own woman. And what's the first choice so many girls make? To fit in with the crowd.

Somewhere between the brain, heart and mouth, a girl's individuality gets lost. Maybe it's swallowed with that first sip of beer. Be an individual. They don't need alcohol to be amazing.

Teenage Guys, maybe they are shy and think alcohol will make them cool. Or think a good time means drinking. But alcohol robs you of your ability to think or react. When they can't think clearly, it's easier for a guy to force girls to have sex. Lots of guys say if a girl is drunk, it's her fault if she gets raped. Did you know one study of teens showed that almost half had been drinking and/or using drugs before engaging in sex that resulted in an unintended pregnancy? Not to mention things like syphilis and AIDS.

Disturbing figures given to me by P.A.C.E. showed that in 2003, 52.2% of all Elko students surveyed have used marijuana, that almost 72% of our students have drank or do drink alcohol and almost 14% have used methamphetamines.

I can't even imagine what the percentages are now with no effort being made in the schools to educate our children.

PLAN: We need to work with Partners Allied for Community Excellence (P.A.C.E.) to create prevention and educational programs for our youth here in Elko County. P.A.C.E. has established advertising, community support meetings and activities for the youth of West Wendover, Carlin, Wells, Jackpot, Owyhee, Elko and Spring Creek. We need to take advantage of these programs which is 100% grant funded and at no cost to Elko County residents. We must take our schools back and also create things for kids to do.
