Statement from Ken Wellington for Sheriffs forum:
First off, I send my apologies for not being at this forum and I want to thank the Chamber and Government Affairs for allowing me this opportunity to address the citizens of Elko County. Because this is such an important event, I feel it necessary to let everyone know the reason for my absence. As most of you are aware, I battled lymphoma a year ago January. I am happy to say that I am now free of the cancer but still need to continue follow up appointments every three to four months for the first two years to insure my healthy status. All of my oncology appointments in Reno were made in January with one being this afternoon, May 3rd , and an additional follow up tomorrow morning, These appointments cannot be changed without an extended delay to get new dates. As many of you know, precautionary appointments are necessary and routine when dealing with cancer and I appreciate your understanding my missing this important forum but also realizing it can not be helped.
Now for my statement:
In 2006, I brought forth the methamphetamine problem which has taken hold of Elko County. At that time, I produced a pro active plan where I pledged to eliminate the methamphetamine use and demand in our county. My pro-active plan looked at education, enforcement and rehabilitation. If I am elected as your sheriff, I will be committed to protecting the community through prevention, partnership and professional service.
The residents of Elko County now face the horror of home break-ins, vandalisms and becoming potential victims of violent crimes. On January 19, 2010, it was reported that thefts and violent crimes are among their highest rates in 10 years for Elko, and I believe there may be a connection to the increased use of drugs and alcohol, coupled with a down economy. As your sheriff, I will create a variety of no cost programs designed to get citizens involved in their community. I will also encourage everyone to play a part in making Elko County safe for its residents and visitors.
As your sheriff, I will strive to take public safety in Elko County to a higher level of effectiveness, efficiency and professionalism. My first commitment would be to balance the Sheriff's Department budget without supplementing from the county's general fund. One of my most important goals will be to help educate elementary age school kids as well as teenagers about the dangers of violence and substance abuse. Our program will be funded entirely by sponsorships and donations by the community members and local businesses, starting with a donation from myself and Eva, and be at no additional cost to the taxpayer.
I believe we must come together as a community to educate ourselves and call for our community leaders to enforce, discuss and address the increase of violent crimes, use of drugs and alcohol abuse in our county.
If you have any questions please visit my web site at www.yoursheriff.com or call me. Again, I apologize for not being able to attend and look forward to meeting with each of you to find out your concerns.
Sincerely,
Ken Wellington
