Gangs- There are different reasons why kids join gangs. Parties, girls, & drugs draw some. Some are looking for a sense of respect and power. Some find a feeling of caring and attention in a gang. It becomes almost a family to them. Some want to make money just to help out at home or to have nice clothes. Some join for self-protection because other gangs pick them on. Some grow up in a neighborhood where it is almost a way of life. Most have some real or imagined problem at home that makes them prefer the streets. As their drug addiction grows, their problems at home become worse because parents don't know how to cope with the addiction.

Why are gang members so violent? Young people engaged in illegal activity often carry weapons for protection. Violence takes place in retaliation for real or perceived wrongs by another gang. Retaliation may target ANY member of a gang, not necessarily the offending individual. Once a climate of war exists between two gangs, violence may be continual. Once recognized as a gang member a young person is in serious danger of being hurt or killed.

If you are afraid that your child is in a gang, he/she probably is. It is better to try to protect a kid who doesn't need it-- than to incarcerate or bury a kid who tried to hide the truth from his parents.

PLAN: We will immediately request from the Elko County Commission that we be reestablished in the Juvenile Task Force. We will take action early. The longer a kid is in a gang, the harder it is to stop. We will encourage the parents of those at risk kids to talk with their sons and daughters sand try to really listen. We need to take a firm stand against illegal activity. Try to get into family counseling.

We will continue to monitor the growth of gangs in Elko County by creating a public involved task force to include West Wendover, Wells, Jackpot, Carlin, Spring Creek and Elko. The Task force will meet once a month with the Elko County Sheriff's deputy, Carlin police department and west Wendover officers assigned to the task force.

We will support the Elko County School District in their efforts to not allow gang activity in Elko County schools, including the wearing of gang clothing, signs or symbols of gang affiliation. Action will be taken against those individuals involved. We will also assist with more presence on school property to assist school police.
