Child Abuse- Child abuse is harm to, or neglect of, a child by another person, whether adult or child. Child abuse happens in all cultural, ethnic, and income groups. Child abuse can be physical, emotional, verbal, sexual or through neglect. Abuse may cause serious injury to the child and may even result in death.
PLAN: We need to have a closer relationship with community leaders, doctors, nurses, hospital workers, social services, child advocate groups, child protective services, local police departments and citizens of Elko County. We need a more intense monitoring and education of physical abuse toward children of Elko County.
We need to report and investigate unexplained or repeated injuries such as welts, bruises, or burns, injuries that are in the shape of an object (belt buckle, electric cord, etc.), broken bones in a child too young to walk or climb, disagreement between the child's and the parent's explanation of the injury, unreasonable explanation of the injury, obvious neglect of the child (dirty, undernourished, inappropriate clothes for the weather, lack of medical or dental care) which might be observed while a person or officer was in a home and fearful behavior from a child.
Approximately 2 million children in the United States are seriously abused by their parents, guardians, or others each year, and more than 1,000 children die as a result of their injuries. Recent studies suggest that approximately 20 percent of children will be sexually abused in some way, usually by someone they know, before they become adults. We have had three children die in this last year.
Emotional and verbal abuse of a child is also common and often goes UN addressed. We need to educate the citizens of Elko County as to signs of sexual abuse, physical abuse and emotional abuse.
