Congratulation is in order for both gentlemen.
Let the real campaign begin.

Elect a Sheriff who will take public safety in Elko County to a higher level of effectiveness, efficiency and professionalism.

On March 1st, 2010 Ken Wellington, a resident of Spring Creek filed to run for the office of Elko County Sheriff. Ken is a 26-year veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department. His experience includes over 18 years investigating violent crimes, crimes against persons, crimes against properties, narcotic and gang related activity. During this time he directed operations and supervised cases involving both Federal and State crimes.

Ken retired to Elko in 2003 where he and his wife Eva own a small business downtown. They have two daughters Amanda 26, who lives and attends college in Las Vegas. Devan; the youngest at 22 years of age is attending college in Oregon. Last year Ken battled Lymphoma, a very treatable form of cancer. He is cancer free now and feeling great.

"If elected I will be committed to our mission to protect the community through prevention, partnership and professional service.

Our first job is to balance the Sheriff’s Department budget. We cannot go forward with any programs until this budget has been balanced and there are no more additional costs to the public.

I will create a variety of programs designed to get citizens involved in their community. I will also encourage everyone to play a part in making Elko County safe for its citizens and visitors.

The cadet and reserve program will give young men and women a hands-on chance to determine if they want to pursue a career in law enforcement. It also builds trust and cooperation between youth, young adults and the Sheriff's department.

One of our most important goals will be to helping educate elementary age school kids as well as teenagers about the dangers of violence and substance abuse. Our program is funded entirely by sponsorships and donations by the community members and local businesses".

The five areas we will insist on addressing with our youth are providing accurate information about tobacco, alcohol and drugs, teaching students decision-making skills, showing students how to resist peer pressure, giving students ideas for alternatives to drug use and resisting gangs and criminal activity.

Ken has the education, experience, leadership skills, vision and commitment to provide the citizen’s of Elko County with the high quality public safety services essential for the well-being of our growing community.

Ken was active with the Southern Nevada Gang Task Force investigating and prosecuting violent crimes, large scale money laundering and narcotic trafficking.

Ken's run for Sheriff in 2006 raised the methamphetamine issue, which unfortunately has taken hold of Elko County. Ken produced a pro active plan in 2006 where he pledged to eliminate the methamphetamine use and demand in our county. Ken's pro-active plan included education, enforcement and rehabilitation.

Ken's training consists of attending the Department of Justice D.E.A. training and Task Force Investigator training, Covert Operations, Advanced Undercover Techniques, U.S. Air force firearms and tactics training. National Law Enforcement Institute and Advanced Gang Investigators School, Polytesting Narcotic training and identification training. U.S. Attorney's office asset, forfeiture and money laundering training along with multiple State and Federal classes, Nevada Police Officers Standard training and Clark County Community Collage (Criminal Justice).

Ken currently chairs the Elko County Advisory Board to manage Wildlife, recently appointed to the Elko County Resource Advisory Board, Public Safety Chair to the Elko Motorcycle Jamboree, past chairperson for the Northeastern Nevada Mothers Against Methamphetamine and an Elko County USBC Association Board member.

As you can see, based on Ken Wellington's experience and education, he is ready and eager to take on the new challenge of serving Elko County as Sheriff.
